Devon Part 1 – Miniatures

Hello and welcome to the latest blog from The Olivia Rose Diaries on November the 15th 2024.

We’re back in the UK visiting family and have taken a holiday cottage in Devon for a week. This first blog begins at the end of our holiday, not because I want to confuse you, but because we visited an enchanting garden today and I wanted to share it with you while the experience was fresh in my mind.

Gardens often look a bit tired at this time of year, but this was not the case at the RHS Garden House, not far from Plymouth. Apart from the first two photos, which give you an idea of the style of the 10 acre plot, the following pictures are all close-ups, and they highlight the delicate beauty of lichen, moss, fungii, seed heads, petals and leaves. Michael and I wandered round together, with him taking the shots, and both of us keeping our eyes open for the small details. I know I have talked in previous blogs about finding beauty in the small things that surround us and yet are so easily overlooked, but it does no harm to remind ourselves of things we already know every now and then.

I hope you enjoy these pictures as much as we enjoyed seeking them out. I haven’t given them their Latin names, in part because I don’t know them all, but also because it’s enough just to enjoy them as they are.

One of the herbaceous borders.
Looking down from the tower.
Dewy lichen on a tree trunk
Perfectly purple
A glistening rosette
Spent verbena flower head.
Starry eyed.
Exotic
A whorl from a wooden bench
Frilly knickers fungus (my name for it)
No idea what this is but it’s amazing
Marvellous moss
Beware of dragons. This had been sculptured in situ from a huge fallen tree and the sunlight was falling naturally on it’s head.

As if all this wasn’t enough they also had a tea room with mouth watering cakes to provide the perfect end to our visit.

Part two will be along in a week or so with some very different vistas.

See you soon.

MJ
